Blog Background and Inspiration
WHAT? This blog covers films from the past in no particular order, but they will be tagged by subject matter keywords for ready reference. The films literally come from a stack on sale DVDs, the idea being, like a dusty rock, they are a gem waiting to be discovered, or in some cases, rediscovered. Finding it in the rummage bin adds to the randomness of it. I didn’t want to fixate on actors and actresses I like, or directors, or themes, or countries, there are plenty of fan sites out there fulfilling that role thoroughly.
WHO? I am a 30-something person living in the USA. I’ve found that things that weren’t very expensive to purchase had, in contrast, high value in craft and resonance; for example, slightly used music albums I bought in college are some of my favorites. And as a younger sibling, I am well acquainted with ‘making do’ with slightly used things. So those themes resurrect once again in my life and take a new turn here.
WHY? For political, ’strictly afterthought’ marketing, or limited funding, thousands of films get released, but don’t get the attention and distribution they deserve. A lot of films debut in New York City and SoCal, but the rest of the States are lucky to see those films ever, even as a DVD. At the DVD point of the lifecycle, the only reason a person would pick it up is the face of a favorite actor, or an intriguing word in the title.
With utmost objectivity (that old-fashioned journalistic ideal), I am covering them here. I hope they can be a reference to people overwhelmed by all the films out there and wanting to make a rewarding choice for a party, film club, school assignment, or just a quiet night at home by yourself with takeout food and a chilled bottle of your favorite beverage.
